Portfolio of Works
Clockwork Oranges
These artworks grew out of the Surfside artworks solely by happenstance. I started a painting and wanted to add some curvalinear forms. So I added a few circles, some within a circle. The color orange felt right at that point in the development of the painting, so the circles were painted orange. When it came time to name the painting I felt Surfside was inappropriate. Then I looked at the painting again and it reminded me of cog wheels, levers and early 19th century clock mechanisms and aha! Clockwork Oranges...a play on the title of Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece movie. This new collection is ongoing and I hope to add many more works to it.
Surfside
This is an ongoing series of paintings named after the location where they were conceived and painted: Surfside, Nantucket, MA. The idea was inspired by Diebenkorn's Ocean Park and Motherwell's Spanish Elegy paintings. They incorporate elements od color field painting and minimalist abstraction.
Still Life and Interior
This series of still lives and interiors channels the early cubist paintings. However they are more colorful than the earlier paintings echoing the contemporary abstract expressionists.
Gouaches
Gouache is a water color paint which is made opaque by the addition of kaolin, a natural occuring clay used to make porcelain. It has a unique, warm quality not found in traditional transparent water color paintings. This collection features a more intimate approach to my work. The pieces are small, often no more than 4 to 6 inches in either dimension, and they are usually "close-ups" of interior settings or objects. Some are studies for larger works. They are simply framed (not shown) and will add a friendly, warm note to any setting, especially if displayed in a cozy, little space in your home.
Paintings inspired by outstanding films
Certain films evoke seem to painterly images. These paintings are based on two of my favorite films. They incorporate referential images from the history or the culture surrounded the film, not necessarily contained in the films themselves
Woodcuts
These are woodcuts, some multi colored requiring sepaerate blocks for each color. All are hand-printed, i.e., no press is used. They are printed on hand made Japanese rice paper, the best paper for woodcuts.
